Cebu Province Forges Solar Power Partnership to Address Energy Demands
Last week marked a significant milestone for both the Philippines and Spain as they embarked on a journey towards a clean energy transition. This moment carried a poignant resonance as it coincided with March 16, 1521, the date when the renowned explorer Magellan discovered and reached the Philippine Archipelago. As we reflect on this shared history, we are reminded of the potential for collaboration between our nations to forge a brighter future. Together, we possess the capacity to surpass the feats of our ancestors and make a positive global impact.
In response to the mounting energy demands in Cebu, the Provincial Capitol has taken proactive measures by forming a strategic alliance with a private consortium to establish a 150-megawatt solar power facility in Daanbantayan town, nestled in northern Cebu.
Led by Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia, the Capitol solidified this partnership by signing a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with Acciona Energia Global and Freya Renewables Inc. Ignacio Domecq, the Business Development Director of Southeast Asia for Acciona Energia Global, and Fermin Alvarez, the General Manager of Freya Renewables Inc., were the signatories representing their respective entities.
The agreement delineates plans for the construction of a solar power plant spanning 180 hectares in Barangay Talisay, Daanbantayan. The acquisition of land for this venture will be facilitated by the Capitol through arrangements with local landowners in the area.
Mayor Sun Shimura echoed this sentiment, anticipating economic benefits for the district and town. Department of Energy (DOE) Secretary Raphael Lotilla’s presence underscored the project’s significance, with Lotilla pledging DOE’s support.
In a testament to Cebu’s strategic significance, Domecq pledged that the province would serve as the consortium’s primary investment hub for the development projects in the Philippines and across Asia.
The consortium will operate and maintain the solar power plant for 25 years, marking a significant step towards sustainable energy solutions in Cebu. This initiative sets a precedent for future public-private partnerships aimed at fostering economic growth and environmental stewardship.
